Reactor Powder Type 'R' & Sintered Powder Type 'S'

CAPTAL® Hydroxlapatite is a high purity synthetic product having a very similar composition to that of the mineral content in human bone. It is thermally stable to 1300ºC in air retaining a highly crystalline structure.

CAPTAL® 'R' manufactured by PBLcan be supplied to various specifications, which are suitable for different applications in the biomedical field.

For example current uses include;

    • Blending with Polyethylene in the manufacture of HAPEX® (Smith & Nephew Inc.Products)
    • Fabrication of specialised HA ceramic products by slip casting.
    • Manufacture of Dense, Microporous, Macroporous Ceramics by a variety of methods.
    • Manufacture of Glass Reinforced HA compounds for increased mechanical performance.

CAPTAL® 'R' is available with the following size distribution
(slight variation is possible)
D10=Approx 2 microns
D50=Approx 4 microns
D90=Approx 6 microns
(measured by laser diffraction)

CAPTAL® is supplied with a mainly monomodal Particle size distribution, however, slightly bimodal batches can be produced.

The surface areas can be controlled from approx 6m2/gram to approx 20m2/gram (measured by B.E.T.method)

CAPTAL® 'S' has been developed for uses that CAPTAL® 'R' is unsuitable. It has beensintered to a high temperature and regraded by milling and air elutriation.

The surface of the particles is quite different and consequently the properties such as bulk density are much higher than CAPTAL® 'R' .

CAPTAL® 'S' is a pale eggshell blue colour. The crystalinity is higher than CAPTAL® 'R' and its flow characteristics are enhanced.

CAPTAL® 'S' is available witha broad size range if required which may be important for some applications. (a wide variation is possible if required)
D10=Approx 2 microns
D50=Approx 6 microns
D90=Approx 12 microns

CAPTAL® 'S' is supplied with a broad particle size distribution.

The high purity and crystalinity of these products ensures low resorption rates when used in vivo with excellent biocompatibility when used in bony sites.
