Plasma Coating

For over 35 years Plasma Coatings Limited (PCL) has provided a specialist service to industry using thermal spraying technology to apply metal, ceramic and composite coatings to a wide range of components. During this time has steadily built a reputation for technological innovation and quality service.

As thermal spraying contractors to the Aerospace and Biomedical industries, we are approved to ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 in addition to holding specific approvals from a range of companies that include:

  • Rolls Royce plc
  • Lucas Aerospace plc
  • A.E.TC. (Turbine Components)
  • Goodrich Aerospace (U.S.A.)
  • Aermacchi (Italy)
  • Westland Helicopters

Additionally, to satisfy ever increasing stringent Aerospace prime requirements, Nadcap accreditation has been achieved for the various coating process systems operated by the company.

Plasma Coatings Limited can produce functionally effective surfaces that can withstand a wide range of corrosive and tribological environments. Coatings chosen from an extensive range of metallic, ceramic and composite materials are applied by the appropriate thermal spraying process chosen from one of the following:

  • Plasma
  • High Velocity Oxy-Fuel
  • Flame spray Wire
  • Flame Spray Powder

Robotic controlled spraying facilities allow us to process components up to 1.5 metres in diameter.

Our laboratory facilities enable coatings to be examinedby micro evaluation and hardness testing to monitor and control key coating characteristics. The laboratory contributes to the development of new coatings and new approvals to further enhance the service provided to our customers.

Typical Applications Include

    • Abrasion
    • Fretting (non-intended motion)
    • Sliding wear (hot and cold)
    • Particle erosion
    • Hot gas erosion
    • Corrosive atmospheres (gaseous or liquid)
    • Impact and heavy single point loading
    • Low and high friction applications
    • Thermal barrier coatings
    • Free standing shapes
    • Biological environments (implants)

The company offers a complete service for the repair of existing components. Alternatively complete manufacture of coated parts from new. A typical repair scheme may include one or more of the following; removal of any existing coatings, pre-machining, coating application and, where applicable, surface finishing.

In cases where worn or mis-machined components did not benefit from coatings technology, real advantages in cost of replacement and enhanced performance are available.
